Mary Hinkson news clipping
Description
News clipping about the passing of Mary Hinkson, one of two of the first Black dancers with Martha Graham Dance Company.
Mary De Haven Hinkson (1925–2014), a trailblazing dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company, passed away at 85 in Manhattan. Mary received both a bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin where her dance mentor Margaret H’Doubler introduced her to Martha Graham’s dance style. She was noted for her artistry, elegance, and role in breaking racial barriers in modern dance. A Philadelphia native, she was among the first African American dancers in Graham’s troupe, performing leading roles for over two decades and later teaching at Juilliard and Howard University, leaving a lasting legacy in modern dance.
