Description
-
The 157th Graduating Class: June 16, 1939. The Girls Normal School, aka, Philadelphia High School for Girls was established in 1848 as the first publicly supported high school for girls in Pennsylvania (Wikipedia contributors, n.d.).
-
Georgine Elizabeth Upshur graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1939. This is evidenced by a program from her induction into the Sophrosyne Chapter of the National Honor Society around that time, as well as other materials in the Georgine E. Upshur Willis collection at the Library Company of Philadelphia. Following high school, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1943. Her life and accomplishments are documented through photographs, correspondence, and ephemera that highlight her role in Philadelphia’s African American middle-class community during the mid-20th century ([Georgine E. Upshur Willis Collection], Library Company of Philadelphia Digital Collections, n.d.).
Like Miss Upshur, the high school continues to have a rich history of graduating female trailblazers that standout in their chosen fields. Demographically, the high school has a diverse student population (Search for Public Schools - Girls HS, n.d.).
