Photograph of the cast and crew of David's Rock
Description
Likely taken during a pre-production rehearsal at a nearby church, as suggested by the rows of pews and hymnals in the foreground.
The Philadelphia Afro-American Historical and Cultural Museum hosted David’s Rock, a gospel rock musical by Black playwright Claude A. Boyd. Based on the biblical story of King David, the production—written, directed, and choreographed by Boyd—was staged without a set in the museum’s basement auditorium.

Produced in the summer of 1983 by the Black Theater Festival (BTF) under the auspices of Theater Center Philadelphia, this work was part of BTF’s fourth summer season. Over eight weeks, the festival staged multiple plays, with David’s Rock running from July 26 to August 8 (Nelson 1983).

The cast is pictured; individuals are not identified in the image. James Edwards, positioned center stage, is presumed to be portraying “David,” flanked by two female cast members, possibly Karen Ann Murdock and Janice Jenkins.
