The Links, Incorporated. Eastern Area Conference, April 11-12, 1969. Theme: The Beauty of Blackness-- Channeling Black Hope.
Description
The Links, Incorporated—a national volunteer service organization of professional Black women founded by two Black Philadelphians, Madams. Sarah S. Scott and Margaret R. Hawkins in 1946. The Central New Jersey Chapter of The Links, Incorporated was organized in May 1949 in Princeton, NJ, but incorporated in New Brunswick, NJ in 1951(Chapter History 2024). By 1969, The Links had become a prominent and prestigious African American women’s organizations in the United States, known for combining community service, cultural programming, and social networking among accomplished Black women leaders.
Shown here, the Eastern Area Conference is a biannual activity that represents collective goals and contributed programming from Links chapters within its footprint. Other than conference planning, the Eastern Area’s headquarters in Washington, DC (one of four regions, nationally) fosters new chapter development, provides a conduit for national planning and policy and serves as an administrative entity for eight northeastern states, covering 27 chapters and counting (The Historical Society of Pennsylvania et al. 2007). The full story of the Links lies within the local chapters.

Local branches contribute to program design by taking their lead from national ques, but develop and implement goals locally — each chapter using their own personal flair. For example, Central New Jersey Links programming is based on the Arts, Health and Human Services, Youth needs and National Trends (Chapter History 2024). A 1969 Arts social sponsored by the Links at the NYC Statler Hilton featured a fundraising fashion show entitled “Flapper returns with soul” (Carter 1969).
