In June 1939, Gene’s parents, the Upshurs, hosted a debutante reception with an entrance receiving line of women in white gowns. The ball was a time to introduce Gene and her fellow debutantes to local society. The evening graduation party for the Philadelphia High School for Girls took place at O.V. Catto Hall drew not only the graduating students and their escorts but also prominent Philadelphia adults and power couples, making it a memorable occasion (Library Company of Philadelphia- Gene Upshur: Debutante Photo 1939).
