Description
Handwritten inscription of "J. R. Coleman" inside front cover.

Gospel Pearls, first published in 1921, was a hymnal that includes a combination of African American spirtuals and traditional hymns. It was commonly used in churches, but also at religious conventions and revival meetings. Gospel Pearls played an important role in standarizing gospel music in African American churches. The inscription "JR Coleman" was for John Robert Coleman, grandfather of Elaine Buck. Buck is a co-founder of the Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum, established in 2016 in the historic Mt. Zion AME Church in Skillman, New Jersey.
