Title
The Philadelphia High School for Girls commencement announcement
Description
The 157th Graduating Class: June 16, 1939. The Girls Normal School, aka, Philadelphia High School for Girls was established in 1848 as the first publicly supported high school for girls in Pennsylvania (The Alumnae Association of the Philadelphia High School for Girls, 2025).
Georgine Elizabeth Upshur graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1939. Upshur was also a member of the Sophrosyne Chapter of the National Honor Society .
Following high school, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1943. Her life and accomplishments are documented through photographs, correspondence, and ephemera that highlight her role in Philadelphia’s African American middle-class community during the mid-20th century ([Georgine E. Upshur Willis Collection], Library Company of Philadelphia Digital Collections, n.d.).

The high school continues to have a rich history of graduating female trailblazers that standout in their chosen fields. Demographically, the high school has a diverse student population (Search for Public Schools - Girls HS, n.d.).
