Land Deed, Matthias Ranck seller to George Dyer; Lancaster, PA
Description
This land deed explains the details and debts owed by Matthias Ranck that led to the sale of his property in Marietta, PA to purchaser George Dyer around 1816-1817.
The deed was written by George Hambright Esquire, the High Sheriff of Lancaster County, PA in early May 1816. He writes that the “goods and chattels, lands and tenements of Matthias Ranck” and his $2,150 of debt shall be presented to the County Court of Common Pleas by the third Monday in August. He writes that Matthias Ranck is convicted of debt.

Matthias Ranck at the time of this deed owned land in the Borough of Marietta, Lancaster, PA. The deed indicates this that the Sheriff “had seized and taken in execution a certain Set of ground situate in that part of the Borough of Marietta laid out… and numbered ‘Thirty three’”. Through “a certain other Writ of Venditioni Exponas,” means the individual is forced to return the owed money or the sheriff proceeds to sell the property in order to repay the money (Lewis 1914). The sheriff exposed the grounds to sale in either late April 1816, at which time they were purchased by George Dyer. On April 21, 1817, the sheriff stamped, sealed, and delivered the deed to George Dyer.

Matthias Ranck (1783-1837) was born in Lancaster County, and grew to be a soldier, lumber merchant, and commissioner on the board of the Marietta (and surrounding areas) Trading Company and Turnpike (Seislove 2021). He served as a Private in the War of 1812 (Seislove 2021).

Little publicly accessible information can be found on land purchaser George Dyer. According to the 1840 United States Census, Dyer was between the age of 50-60, making him between the ages of 26-36 at the time of this purchase (Ancestry.com 2010).
